Lisa and Betty thought that you might be interested in hearing about my "Summer 2000" plans. My daughter, Carrie(BA and M.Ed from Gallaudet University) and I are having a summer program called Sign-N-Kids. The day camp is for deaf and hard of hearing children, their siblings and hearing children of deaf adults. The children will have full access to American Sign Language and be able to socialize and play with their peers. This is important to provide because in rural Maine many deaf children may be isolated as the only deaf child in their school. The purpose is to build confidence and social skills through deaf culture and self-esteem building activities.

Carrie and I have found that there is loads of paper work getting started as a tax exempt organization but we keep going. Our goal is to provide this program free of charge to the families so Carrie is busy fund raising. Responses are just beginning to come in and we are very pleased with the enthusiasm and generosity of the public.

This idea is totally my daughters, who as many of you know is deaf. I am very proud of the success that she has achieved. Carrie came back to Maine to work after going to college and working in the Washington D.C. area for eight years. Carrie is now working at the Winterport School with five deaf children. She thoroughly enjoys the job and the school district. She also does family centered education for agencies in the Bangor area.
